Stanley Hoover COLLINS

COLLINS, Stanley Hoover December 18 at home in the Village by the Arboretum, Guelph, age 93. Born in 1917, and raised in Toronto and Willowdale, completing high school at Earl Haig Collegiate, he graduated in Physics from the University of Toronto in 1946. His 4 years there were interrupted by WWII, during which he designed optical instruments including gun sights and range finders. In 1947 he completed his M.A., also at the University of Toronto. After University he moved to Streetsville and worked in Toronto at Massey-Harris as it was then. In 1954 he began 2 years at the Wix oil filter works in eastern Toronto, and in 1956 was hired as an instructor at the University of Toronto, where he worked for 2 years until moving to Guelph as a professor at the Ontario Agricultural College. During his tenure there at the University of Guelph, he established an inter-university graduate course in integrated aerial surveys, and founded the Ontario Association for Remote Sensing. He retired from the University of Guelph in 1982, but continued working until 1986 with a software company he had formed in partnership with George Moon. Stan was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Gertrude (Gary) McCall. He is survived by his six children: Russ and his two children Michael and Jason; Billie and her two children Paul and Christena; Reid and his two children Georgia and Laurel; Timothy and his child Russ; Laurel and her two children Aaron and David; and David and his child Tamara. He leaves eleven great grandchildren. There will be a ceremony and reception on Saturday, January 8, 2010 from 3 P.M. to 5 P.M. at Reid Hall, Village by the Arboretum, Guelph, ON. Memorial contributions to the CNIB, 1929 Bayview Ave., Toronto, ON, M4G 3E8 would be appreciated. Collins in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest, University of Guelph Arboretum. Dedication service, Sunday, September 18, 2011 at 2:30 pm.
