Alan Harries

HARRIES, Alan Alan Stanley Harries passed away peacefully April 3, 2010 in Peterborough, with his family by his side. Beloved husband, and best friend of Patricia (Wilson) for 40 years. Survived by his brother, David (Lynda), brother-in-law to Lorrie and Leo Gaborie, nephews Chris (Sarah), Brian, niece Jackie Daniels (Brian), god father to Elizabeth Maslowski. Alan graduated from Kenner Collegiate, and then University of Western Ontario 1969. He received his L.L.B from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1972, called to the bar with honors in 1974, and was awarded a one year judge clerkship. In 1979 he received his L.L.M from Osgood. He practiced in Toronto until 1977, when he and Pat moved back to Peterborough and he opened his own law office, until retiring in 1995. Alan was one of three chartered directors of Arbour Theatre. He served as Chairman and Director of the Peterborough Industrial Development Corporation, and was a long time board member of the Peterborough family Y. When Alan retired in 1995, he and his "trusty admiral" purchased a sailing yacht and spent 11 wonderful years sailing southern waters and meeting many new friends from all over the world. Between sailing adventures, he managed to become a respectable tennis player, always able to find a tennis court and partners where ever he was. He and Pat joined Quaker Park Tennis Club in Peterborough and had many great hours playing there. According to Alan's wishes, he has been cremated. There will be a Celebration of his life on Sunday, April 25, 2010 at the NISBETT FUNERAL HOME AND CHAPEL 600 Monaghan Rd., S., Peterborough from 2-6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society or to the Princess Margaret Hospital Leukemia Research Fund. A special thanks to all of you who donated blood over the years, because without you more lives would be shortened. On-line condolences may be made at www.nisbettfuneralhome.com
