SPOLTORE, John Philip August 25, 1971 - April 30, 2010 At Toronto Western Hospital after a brief but courageous battle with brain cancer. Adored son of Noni Campbell (Tony Bridger) and Ralph Spoltore Sr.; loved so much by sister Lori (Steve Slessor) and brother Ralph (Andrea); soul mate of his beloved Doris Baumgartner; cherished daddy to Kendall; and special uncle to Charlie and Lindsay Slessor and Mackenzie and Johnny Spoltore (with whom he shares a birthday). Loved by Nanny Thelma Sheppard, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Predeceased by grandma and grandpa Campbell and Murphy, all awaiting his arrival in Heaven. Johnny was a lifelong elite athlete who personified teammanship, sportsmanship and leadership. Growing up in ‘K-town’, he played minor hockey and baseball prior to being drafted into the Ontario Hockey League. He was the Overage Player of the Year in his final year playing for the North Bay Centennials, as well as the OHL Most Sportsmanlike Player of the Year. Receiving such awards as the President’s Award at Wilfrid Laurier University for best male athlete of the year, attest to his leadership capabilities and his true love of sports and team play—hence he is our captain of ‘Team 23’ - the number he proudly wore during his career. Johnny will forever be remembered for his generous nature, friendly spirit and amazing smile. He loved life and enjoyed every day to the fullest. He had the ability to see the good in everyone and had a tremendous love of family and friends. He was our ‘go-to-guy’, always stepping up when others needed help. Along with his great sense of humour, he truly had the ability to have way more fun than all the rest of us. He was caring, extremely loyal, and more than anything else, he was genuine to the core. Visitation will be at the Henry Walser Funeral Home , 507 Frederick Street in Kitchener, Tuesday from 7-9 p.m., and Wednesday 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of Johnny’s life will be held Thursday at Creekside Church, 660 Conservation Drive in Waterloo. Doors will open at 2:23 p.m. and the memorial celebration will follow at 3:23 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to wear comfy and colourful attire to celebrate the colourful life he led. A celebration of his life will carry on Thursday evening in the Turret at Wilfrid Laurier University, doors opening at 6:23 p.m. - everyone welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations to The John Spoltore ‘Team 23’ Memorial Fund would be greatly appreciated (cards available at the funeral home). Visit www.henrywalser.com for Johnny’s memorial.
