McNEIL, John Albert 83, of Stratford, Ontario passed suddenly at his home on January 1, 2016, with his wife Mary Lou by his side, following a happy afternoon spent with friends. John, a lover of operas, books and beautiful women, was born in Hamilton, Ontario July 16, 1932. Following school he worked for Canada Glass and Stelco. Formerly married to the late Muriel Smith, loving father to three children, Lynette, John and Dr. Bernadette (Don), proud papa of grandchildren Sarah, Charlotte, Andrew and Connor Plumstead, Paris. Also survived by his sister Joan (Smokey) Baker and brother Michael (Pat), Hamilton and their extended families. Married to his soulmate, best friend and partner-in-crime Mary Lou Middleton, Dundas, they resided in Ancaster, and most recently in Stratford. Loving step-dad to Emily, Aaron (Maureen) and adoring papa of his sweetie Isla, Ottawa. With special mention of his love for his new found third family Kevin, Kim and Conor Gormley, Stratford. John loved sports of all kinds. His particular passions were baseball and figure skating. With more than 45 years of voluntary service to the Skate Canada's Western Ontario Sections working with young and old skaters; his ultimate focus was the young skater and doing what he could to enhance their individual skating experiences. He also mentored elite skaters and many others who became accomplished Canadian and International champions, as well as outstanding skating coaches and administrators. He was devoted to community service and did all he could to help Stratford groups as diverse as Rotary Group of Festival City, SABBA, Friends of the Festival and his Cobourg Street neighbors. He was known to say that the last ten years living in Stratford were the best of his life, during which he and Mary Lou, with their corgi Baden, ran The Caversham House Bed and Breakfast. They met many people from all over the world and walks of life. John was often heard to say, 'there are no strangers here, just friends you've yet to meet'.
