SWALES, Douglas Norman After a month in the hospital due to complications of diabetes, Doug passed away on April 9, 2019 at the Welland Hospital, Welland Ontario. He was 72 years old. Douglas was born in Toronto on September 14, 1946. He is survived by his wife (Sharon), his daughter (Kim and her partner Roman), his son (Michael and his wife Laura); his grandchildren Rianna and Ella; his brother (Thomas). Predeceased by his parents (Norman and Ruth), and birth mother (Vilee). His eldest daughter Corrie Dudas had passed away a number of years ago but held a very special place in his heart to the day he passed away. He also had siblings from his birth mothers' later marriage - Joseph, Louis, and Helen. He had an extended family and many friends who were there for him, too many to list but just know he loved you all. Doug held many jobs in his life: most memorable were with Toronto Transit Commission, Gray Coach and Farr's Coach Lines. He especially loved the opportunity to drive on the open road through Canada and United States. He changed careers and went back to school to enter the horticulture fields: until they found out he had a DZ licence and back he went to driving: on deliveries through southern Ontario and parts of the states but he loved that freedom of not being cooped up in an office. Doug was involved with The Metis Nation of Ontario: though it was a limited capacity, it was very important to him and close to his heart. Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life will be held later in the year. I think this sums up Doug very well: 'I think the legacy is really the company that we built. That's what makes me happy. I'm a very simple person, so that's all I really need'. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Diabetes Association.
