Gladys BARBER Obituary

BARBER, Gladys After an exceptionally long, rich, life full of love and devotion to family, friends and caring for others, Gladys Barber (nee Fairey) passed away on July 30, 2019 at Eagle Terrace Long Term Care Home, at the truly remarkable age of 101 years and five months. Gladys was a lifelong resident of the Town of Newmarket, except for a short time during the Second World War, where she accompanied her husband of 69 years and 346 days, Leslie Barber at his various postings as a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force. She was predeceased in 2011 by Leslie at the age of 93, as well as by parents Flossie and Ernest Matthew Fairey, infant daughter Leslie Ann and siblings Barbara Hunter (Bruce), Ernest ""Cap"" Fairey (Jean), Stella Rook (Jim), and Roy Fairey (Alice). Gladys is survived by her youngest sibling, Joan Hale (Floyd), son James M. Barber (Julie) and is remembered fondly for her generosity, support, and for providing a home of unquestioning love and security over the years by her adored grandchildren Christa Lacey (Al) and James C. M. Barber. She will be missed by her great-grandchildren, Hayden and Camden Lacey as well as numerous family members and friends. Along with sister Stella, Gladys was a member of the 1939 graduating class from the Nursing program at Toronto East General Hospital and was the Head Nurse of the Case Room (delivery room) at York County Hospital in Newmarket for more that two decades (now Southlake Regional Health Centre). For many years after her retirement in 1973, she was recognized by generations of mothers throughout the community who remembered her care and professionalism in helping them through the delivery and subsequently care for their newborns. A private funeral service has been entrusted to Roadhouse & Rose Funeral Home , with interment near many of her cherished family members at Newmarket Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local chapter of the Arthritis Society. Online condolences may be made at www.roadhouseandrose.com
