Ernest MILLER Obituary

MILLER, Ernest February 28, 1927 - August 10, 2019 Lieutenant-Colonel (Retired) RCAF Peacefully, surrounded by family at Stoneridge Manor, Carleton Place on Saturday August 10, 2019. Born outside Saint John, New Brunswick he grew up on a homestead farm in northern Saskatchewan, in Wingham, and Woodstock, Ontario. Following graduation from the University of Western Ontario in 1949, he began his career in the field of sports and recreation management, first in Wingham, then with the Royal Canadian Air Force, culminating in the directorship of the Department of Physical Education, Recreation and Amenities after 47 years. His work took him to postings in Alberta, France, Ontario and Quebec. In 1989, he retired to devote himself to his interests in gardening, walking, writing (memoirs), genealogy and enjoyment of varied family activities. He was also athletic and active in various sports throughout his life. He was a regular member of St. James Anglican Church, Carleton Place. Survived by his devoted wife, Marion (nee Bateman). Loving father of Patricia (Scott), Linda (Nathan), Gordon (Julia), Peter (Barbara). Proud grandfather of Ariel Birkinshaw (Gordon), Alex and Gabrielle Wilson, Jenna and Sarah Miller, Evan and Arin Klein. Dear great-grandfather of Georgia and Chelsea Birkinshaw. Predeceased by his son Ernest Miller, parents Ernest Miller and Ethel Serle, his sister Elise Harris (Arthur) and his brother Donald Miller (Marjorie). Will be missed by his many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at Stoneridge Manor, the Rosamond Wing of the Almonte General Hospital and Dr. Drake for their expert and considerate care. A private family service and interment will be held and a public memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Nature Conservancy of Canada or Muscular Dystrophy Canada would be appreciated by the family.
