Elsie AMMERMAN Obituary

AMMERMAN, Elsie (nee Appelt) At the age of 94, on Monday, September 30 at Juravinski Hospital. Predeceased by her loving husband Arthur. Cherished mother of Dayle Ammerman (John Pow) and Ron (Mary Jane) Ammerman. She will be dearly missed by her grandchildren Wesley (Lexine) Ammerman, Alexander Pow, Kenton (Aubrey) Ammerman, Taylor Pow (Nathan Boersma), Garrett Ammerman (Ana Fillmore), Meredith Pow, and Trevor Ammerman. Elsie was especially proud of her great-grandchildren Eli, Wynn, Sybil and Milo. She was predeceased by her sisters Emily (Dave) McCarthy and Amelia Appelt, and her brothers Benny Appelt, Alfred (Hertha) Appelt and Bill (Doreen) Appelt; and her twin siblings, Evelyn and Albert, who passed away in infancy. Elsie will be fondly remembered by her remaining in-laws, and by her nephews and nieces from both the Appelt and Ammerman families, as well as by close family friends Paul and Karen Running and their two children Tyler and Shawn, who called Elsie 'Gramma Ammer'. Elsie was born in Esk, Saskatchewan in 1925 to Emil and Matilda (Hein) Appelt. As a young woman, she left Esk to work in and enjoy the city life of Weyburn, Saskatchewan. There she was swept off her feet by a young Ontario sailor and carpenter by the name of Arthur Ammerman. They were married in 1948 and moved east, living in Thunder Bay and Saint Catherines before settling in Hamilton. Together they raised two children while Elsie also worked part-time for the Hamilton Children's Aid Society and helped in Art's real estate business. Elsie was particularly proud of climbing the stairs up and down Hamilton Mountain most days as part of her commute to the Children's Aid. She continued her exercise regimen with kayaking in her eighties and going to the gym regularly in her nineties. She leaves behind her prized exercise hula hoops, which she continued to use throughout her life. Family was the focus of Elsie's life and her happiest times were spent when the family gathered together; she loved to cook the big celebration dinners and she especially enjoyed the new babies enlarging the family, first the grandchildren and, more recently, four beautiful great-grandchildren. She was accomplished at sewing, needlepoint and knitting, and she made many beautiful items for family members. Elsie was very happy when, in the past few years, the Appelt cousins re-connected and held several family reunions; she was able to attend two in Saskatoon and one here in southern Ontario and enjoyed seeing the generations come together. After the passing of Art some 21 years ago, Elsie moved to a condominium apartment. She loved her condo, had many good friends there, and lived there independently until a year ago when she moved into the Caroline Place Retirement Residence. She enjoyed the staff and made several new friends there. We will all miss Elsie's zest for life, her prized apple pies, her Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner prep, her stenciled birthday cards and her extreme generosity with family. She loved her lotteries and, while she never won the big lottery payoff; with Elsie in our lives, we, her family, were all winners in the lottery of life. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A private interment for the family will take place at the Mount Forest cemetery.
