GARROD, Denis William January 12, 1926 - October 9, 2019 With deep and heavy sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Denis on October 9, 2019 at Applewood Retirement Residence, Peterborough. Devoted husband and best friend of Mary (nee Lawrence) (predeceased November 9, 2016), married for 65-1/2 wonderful years. Dear father of Ruth and her husband, Dale Cameron (in Brooklin, Ontario), Anne Laakso (in Sudbury), and Bruce and his wife, Robin (in Uxbridge). Wonderful grandfather of Brian (and his wife, Nat), Christine, Austin and Dana. Cherished great-grandfather of Deliah, Talyssa, Karina and Anka Laakso. Denis was born in England and lived there for the first 20 years of his life. He was the son of John and Janet (Maas) Garrod. He is predeceased by his brothers, John and Cecil, and his sister, Janet. He will be missed by his nephews and nieces and their families, as well as by their neighbours on the street where he and Mary lived for 65 years. Denis served with the Royal Navy during World War II. He served on the Landing Craft Tank 980 as part of the D-day invasion of the Normandy beaches (Sword Beach) on June 6, 1944, and Walcheren Island in the River Scheldt in November 1944. After the war, Denis came to Canada and settled in Peterborough, working in Canadian General Electric Company for 20 years. At the age of 41, Denis decided to change careers and became an electricity and electronics teacher at Adam Scott Secondary School. He retired from teaching in 1985. Denis was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 52 and the Peterborough Naval Association. Denis spent the last year of his life at Applewood Retirement Residence and deeply appreciated the love shown to him by all the staff. Dad was always devoted to the love of his life, Mary. His family was the most important part of his life. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for more than 60 years and a faithful member of St. James United Church. For many years, Dad was an avid amateur radio operator, under the call letters VE3CYR. Dad was a wonderful story teller, often while wearing his infectious smile, and also with an amazing memory, able to recall details of his life back to his childhood. He and Mom strongly believed in the critical importance of the Peterborough Regional Health Centre that they generously supported, being a member of the Benefactors Council. The family would like to thank the doctors and their staff who attended to Dad's care in his last years - Dr. Jonathan Mallory, Dr. William Hughes, and Dr. William Meade. Dad thought very highly of all of you. Also a sincere thank you to the nurses from St. Elizabeth Society, the staff at Applewood and Dad's friends at the Peterborough Legion. As per Dad's wishes, cremation has taken place and Mom's and Dad's ashes have been mixed together. Private interment will take place at a later date in the family plot at Little Lake Cemetery. A celebration of Denis' life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 52, 1550 Lansdowne Street West, Peterborough, on October 21, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. beginning with a Legion Service. Thanks are extended to HIGHLAND PARK FUNERAL CENTRE for taking care of all the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Peterborough Regional Health Centre or Branch 52 of the Royal Canadian Legion.
