Frank MONTEIRO Obituary

MONTEIRO, Frank It is with great sadness we announce that Frank Monteiro passed away surrounded by his family at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, October 15, 2019. Frank spent 35 years as a police officer with the Waterloo Regional Police Service. He was both the first Portuguese police officer in Ontario and the first Portuguese city councillor in the region. He represented Ward 7 for the past three terms. Frank had a zest for life, a love for his family, great pride in his Portuguese heritage, and was Cambridge's biggest advocate. He lived every day to its fullest and if he could do it; never miss a party. He prided himself on being a champion of the ""little guy"" and never turned his back on a challenge. Tenacity was one of his strongest qualities, but he also wanted to understand your perspective; ""help me to see what you see"" was one of his go to lines. His battle with cancer was a valiant fight which he fought with courage and strength. When he was given his final prognosis, his concern was to make sure that his family was going to be alright and upon some of his final instructions, in true Frank fashion he said, ""Let's take a picture with everybody, happy thoughts"". Frank's love of Cambridge was one of his greatest passions, he would always brag of our rivers, our heritage buildings, our development and our diverse community. He wanted everyone to be Ambassadors of our City. He was proud of the fact that this ""kid"" from Santa Maria, Azores was given the opportunity to serve both the Waterloo Regional Police and City of Cambridge. He relished his time with both institutions and served them with pride. The last few days of his life are the basis of the memories which his family and friends will treasure; outdoors, enjoying the fantastic fall weather behind the hospital overlooking the beautiful Grand River. Here, he was wheeled around and had an opportunity to make known his feelings on life, family, friends and the community which he loved so dearly. He will be truly missed but his presence will always be felt. Beloved husband of Fatima and dear father of Taylor (Kyle) and Jeff (Lisa); loving step father of Amanda. Loving grandfather of Nevaeh Grace and Leonardo Francisco. Dear brother of Lucy (Joe), Tony (Sharon) and Walter (Karen). Frank was predeceased by his father and mother Jose and Maria Chaves. Frank will be resting at the Cambridge City Hall, 50 Dickson Street, Cambridge on Thursday, October 17 from 6 - 9 p.m. and Friday, October 18 from 2 - 4 p.m. and 6 - 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, 185 Elgin Street S., Cambridge on Saturday, October 19, 2019 at 11 a.m. Interment Parklawn Cemetery. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the We Care Campaign at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital would be appreciated by the family. Parish prayers to be recited on Friday at 8 p.m. Arrangements entrusted to Corbett Funeral Home, 519-740-0669.
