Using the new LifeNews.ca (Please note content goes back to 2009. Content prior to that can be found at local public libraries)
In January, 2013 we relaunched lifenews.ca to allow visitors to find announcements five different ways: (1) searching by keyword; (2) browsing listings by newspaper, (3) browsing listings by location, (4) browsing listings by date, or (5) browsing listings by category. Here's how the five methods work:
Search by keyword
In the main teal search bar across the top of all pages, choose any keywords to search by. Often a person's name (e.g. John Doe) is a good search term. You don't have to fill out the Category box or the Location box. This example search will return any announcements including the words 'John Doe'. At least three letters are required in the 'Search for' box for any search.
If you know the announcement category you're looking for, choose the arrow at the right of the category box to choose one of our categories.
For the announcement location, start typing a city or community in Ontario, and the system will bring up locations we have in our city database for you to choose. Both the category and location boxes are optional.
Hit SEARCH at the far right to return results for your keyword/category/location combination.
Browse by publication
In the left hand navigation area labelled 'Browse by Publication', click on the downward arrow beside 'Select'. This will pop up a list of our newspapers by letter grouping (A-E, F-J, K-O, P-T, U-Z). Choose a newspaper and the page will refresh with most recent listings from that newspaper.
Browse by location
If you choose the downward arrow at the right hand of the 'Browse by Location' box, the system shows you a list of cities in Ontario with current listings. Pull down the scroll bar at the right of this list to move down to the location you're after. As soon as you've chosen a city, the page will refresh with the most recent announcements from that city or community.
Browse by date
If you know the day the announcement will appear in your local newspaper, you can use the calendar to browse announcements by date. Be sure to hit 'GO' beside the Browse by Date box on the left hand side to return announcements that were published on that date.
If you choose browse by publication or location, the system will remember either your chosen publication or location for your next visit to lifenews.ca and immediately show you results based on that selection.
Browse by category
Below the Browse by Date calendar on the left hand side of the home page, there is a list of announcement categories. Click on the + sign beside each category to see a list of more specific announcement subcategories. If you find the subcategory you're interested in, click on the name of that subcategory. For example, in the Obituaries and Memorials category, you could choose the Obituaries and Death Notices subcategory. The system will then refresh the page to show most recent obituary listings in that subcategory.
How long do the announcements stay online?
Your announcement will be kept on LifeNews.ca for 30 days, after which point it will be available indefinitely through the LifeNews.ca archives.
How do I access the LifeNews.ca archives? (Please note content goes back to 2009. Content prior to that can be found at local public libraries)
When you click on any LifeNews.ca category name, you will see a list of time frame options (TODAY, 7 DAYS, 30 DAYS, 60 DAYS, 90 DAYS and ALL). Selecting ALL will give you the ability to view all content, including the archives. Adversely, you can also use the calendar to select a date and view the applicable listings. Once your search results appear on screen, you can then choose to sort the announcements by ‘Date’ or ‘Alphabetical’ through the drop down box located to the right of the time frame links.
How can I access older announcements?
Announcements are kept on LifeNews.ca for 30 days, after which point they can be found in the LifeNews.ca archives. If the announcement you are looking for is not in the online archives, please send us an email or check with your local library.
How do I include an image with my LifeNews.ca announcement?
A representative from your chosen newspaper will contact you to review the details of your
announcement. At that time, they will ask you if you have an image that you would like to submit with the ad, and will give you an email address at the
newspaper where you may send your image.
How do I make changes to an announcement?
To make changes to an online announcement, to correct an error, or to add an image, please send us an email.
How long will it take for my announcement to appear?
Your announcement will appear online the same day it runs in your selected newspaper.
How do I search for announcements from my local newspaper?
On the homepage in the top left area, there is a filter entitled ‘Browse by Publication’. Use the popup list of newspapers by letter to select the newspaper of your choice.
Once you have your newspaper selected, the system will return you to a page with recent announcements published in that newspaper.
Can I search by using more than one filter? For example, search in a category and a location.
Absolutely! You can pick multiple items in the top teal search box to fine tune your search. In addition, if you’ve searched for a keyword already, the system retains your search term and location for the next search.
What order are the announcements in?
The notices are listed in the order of the most recently placed at the top, to the oldest at the bottom.
What is the date I see listed on some of the announcements?
The date shown under a notice headline is the date the event took place and it does not necessarily reflect the date a notice ran in the newspaper. For
example, if a parent is listing the birth of their child in their local newspaper, one week after the child was born, the parent will still list the actual
birth date as the event date, September 17, 2008, even though the announcement is scheduled to run in the newspaper on September 24, 2008.
Can I use the calendar on LifeNews.ca to browse by date?
Absolutely! Simply click on the calendar icon and select the date you are interested in browsing. Once you have selected your date, click on the 'Go' button to see results for that date. The calendar browse date is always defaulted to today’s date and the results are
shown based on the date the notice ran in the newspaper.
How can I sign the Guest Book?
To sign a Guest Book, first locate the desired announcement. Once you click on the announcement title, you will see the full announcement. Before you are
able to sign the Guest Book, you will need to Login or Register on LifeNews.ca. If you have an account with Facebook, you may also use your Facebook account
to Login to LifeNews.ca. To Login or create a LifeNews.ca profile, you may click on ‘Login/Register’ located at the top right hand side of the page, or
click on ‘Login to sign the Guest Book’ located below the announcement text. Once you Login or Register, LifeNews.ca will take you back to your announcement
page. On the left hand side of the page, underneath the title of the announcement, you will see a link that says ‘Sign the Guest Book’. Once you click on
the link, you will see the Guest Book for your desired announcement. To add your own message, you will need to click ‘Sign the Guest Book’ now located at
the top right hand side of the screen. Once you click ‘Sign the Guest Book’, a window will appear. You will need to fill in your name and a comment, and
click on ‘Submit’. Your Guest Book entry will then appear under the announcement.
Why didn’t my Guest Book comment appear when I clicked ‘Sign the Guest Book’?
Your Guest Book comment will only appear if you are logged in prior to adding your comment. Please see How can I sign the Guest Book for instructions on how to Login or Register.
How can I edit or delete my Guest Book comment?
You cannot do so yourself, so please review your comment thoroughly before clicking ‘Submit’ . Should you need to have your comment edited or deleted,
please email us your requested changes.
How can I access an older Guest Book?
LifeNews.ca keeps all of the Guest Books created with LifeNews announcements. To find an older Guest Book, you may search the archive for the older announcements' associated Guest Book. Some of the associated guestbooks are still being transferred from our old system. We aim to have them back online before March 1, 2013.
How do I report an offensive Guest Book comment?
To report an offensive Guest Book comment, please click the ‘! Alert a Moderator’ link located at the bottom of the comment.
Why does the site ask me if I want to log in using Facebook?
Logging in using Facebook means you won’t have to create another username and password to perform the more advanced functions, such as writing in someone’s
guestbook, on LifeNews.ca. Signing in using your Facebook account will also make it easy for you to share your comments or the announcements of interest on
your Facebook profile.
What if I have another question?
