    GUTSELL, Bernard Victor, LLD Of Guelph, passed away peacefully at the Guelph General Hospital on Thursday, March 4, 2010 in his 96th year. Beloved husband of Barbara Gutsell (nee McLeod). Loved father of Anne (Michael) Juergensen, Sarah (Steven) Elliott and Robin Gutsell (Richard Wiacek). Loving grandfather of Melanie, Bryan, Sheri, Jason, Adam, Kelsey, Erica, Brian, Ian and Heather. Great-grandfather of Nathan, Crystal, Justin, Davin, Michelle, Chad, Coleman, Holly, Grayson and Logan. Great-great-grandfather of Jaxen. Predeceased by children, David Anthony, Bernard Andrew and Jean Amanda and his sister, Daphne. Bernard was born in Dover, England on June 5, 1914. He received a BA from King’s College, London in 1939. He served in the RAF as a Squadron Leader (WWII). He moved to Canada in 1948 and joined the Geographical Bureau of the Federal Government. In 1949, Bernard wrote the first book on the geography of Newfoundland to commemorate its joining Canada. He established the journal, Cartographica in 1965, later that year he joined the faculty of York University where he was a Fellow of Winters College. He retired in 1989. Bernard enjoyed copper enameling, wine making, film and travel. A memorial service will be held at Dublin St. United Church, 68 Suffolk St., W., Guelph, Ontario on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. (Reception to follow in the church hall).
